2025 Day 9: Sound of silence

Sound of silence
by Penelope Olive

Silence can be deafening if I sit still
long enough to hear the shrill
sound of it…

Are those whistling beating sounds
my own heart’s bleating pounds
in rhythm?

Like a train off in the distance
the steel of the wheels prance
in my head

‘til I, longing for sounds in my ear
rise up to join the day and hear
voices dear.

Prompt:
And here’s our optional prompt for the day. Like music, poetry offers us a way to play with and
today we’d like to challenge you to try writing a poem of your own that uses rhyme, but without adhering to specific line lengths. For extra credit, reference a very specific sound, like the buoy in Hillyer’s poem.
