A Dream Apart by Penelope Olive
Grief doesn’t leave me behind
its work is to carry me through
it’s a push me pull me kind of struggle
an awkward and unwelcome dance.
Are you here with me now in the quiet?
I feel peace, and so it’s a yes
thank you, I can’t do this alone
only a dream vision consolation apart.
Take me with you sometimes where I may go
and I will do the same with you here
that when we meet again where you are
we will happily continue...you’re so dear.
Prompt: And now, our (optional) daily prompt. In his poem, “Goodbye,” Geoffrey Brock describes grief in three short stanzas, the second of which is entirely made up of a rhetorical dialogue. Today, write your own meditation on grief. Try using Brock’s form as the “container” for your poem: a few short stanzas, with a middle section in which a question is repeated with different answers given.
Happy (or at least
meaningful) writing!
